Style B Kelly Automatic Press Book of Instructions

Elizabeth, NJ

Kelly Press Division, American Type Founders Company

April 1927

34 pages. 20 illustrations. Oblong 4to, original printed red wrappers. The 1927 edition of an instruction manual for the Kelly Press.

An illustrated instruction manual for the Kelly Style B Press, an automatic cylinder press was named for its designer, William B. Kelly, and first introduced in 1914. It proved very popular and went through numerous different models through the early 1950s. Fine provenance: Laid into this copy is a typed postcard from printer Lewis Osborne, of Ashland, Oregon, dated Jan. 9, 1973, to San Francisco printer Adrian Wilson: "Dear Adrian, Here is the Kelly instruction manual returned to you, with many, many thanks. There were quite a few pages in this that were not in my green-covered manual that came with the press . . . and I've already learned a lot that I didn't know before. It was grand to see you and Joyce again, and I'm so grateful for your help. All best wishes, Lew." The earliest manual recorded for this press in OCLC is 1925.  OCLC records one copy of this edition (NY State Library).
