Title:
Le Decameron de Jean Boccace
Author:
Boccaccio, Giovanni
Place:
Londres [i.e. Paris]
Publisher:
[chez Pierre Prault]
Date:
1757-1761
Description:

5 volumes. viii, 320; 292; 203; 280; 269 pp. With 5 engraved title pages; portrait of Boccaccio & added title in Vol. I; 110 copper-engraved plates & 97 tailpieces after Gravelot, Boucher, Cochin and Eisen, engraved by Aliamet, Baquoy, Flipart, Legrand, Lemire, Lempereur, etc. Plus 20 additional engraved plates before letters, of a more sexually explicit nature. (8vo) 20x12 cm (7¾x4¾"). period mottled calf ruled in gilt, spines decoratively tooled in gilt, morocco lettering pieces, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt.

Rare set of this superb French illustrated edition of Boccaccio's Decameron, with the addition of twenty more explicit engraved plates, uncredited as to artist or engraver. We could find only three other sets with the extra unsigned erotic plates listed as having sold at auction by American Book Prices Current since 1975 - the most recent being in 1997 - and two of those did not have the full complement of twenty. The majority of the illustrations in the work were designed by Gravelot, and this remains arguably his finest effort. Bookplates of P. Guy Pellion.
