Description:

Forty lithographed plates, with three maps (lacking the folding Military Reconnaissance map). Octavo. Original brown cloth binding, with a printed paper spine label. 30th Congress, 1st Session. [Senate.] Executive, No. 7. First Edition.

Emory commanded the fourteen-man detachment of topographical engineers that accompanied General Stephen Watts Kearny and the Army of the West on their march from Fort Leavenworth through the Southwest to Los Angeles during the Mexican War. His daily record documented not only the military actions of the U. S. Army as it pacified New Mexico and Southern California, it also reported the findings of the soldier-scientist topographical engineers as they encountered the native inhabitants and unique flora, fauna, and geology of the region. Rendered in a vivid and dramatic style, it is among the best written and earliest narratives of the Mexican War. Rittenhouse 188, Wagner-Camp 148:1, The Zamorano Eighty 33.

Donated by Nick Ervin, San Diego, CA.
