Letter by U.S. Grant as 1st Lt., 4th Inf. to brevet Brigadier General George Talcott, Chief of Ordinance

Grant, Ulysses S.

Sackets Harbor, NY

Single sheet, 8x10".

An uncommon early letter from Grant as a 1st lieutenant and company commander. Grant writes, "Madison Barracks / Sackets Harbor, N.Y. / April 2, 1849 / Sir, / I have the honor herewith to forward my return of Ordnance and Ordnance stores pertaining to (I) Co. 4th Reg't of Inf'y for the quarter ending the 31st of March / 1849 / I am *** / Very Respectfully / Your Obt. Svt. / U.S. Grant / 1st Lt., 4th Inf. / ***."

Following Grant's service in the Mexican War, he received assignments as a quartermaster to several different posts from 1849-1852. His first post-war assignments took him and his new wife, Julia, to Detroit and Sackets Harbor, New York. Autograph letters from Grant during his early days in the army are scarce.
