An excellent copy of the first edition of one of the genuine classics relating to the Southwest, of great rarity.  Reid's overland journey began in Marion, Alabama in September of 1856 in a party known as the Mesilla Valley Company, whose purpose was to explore the new Gadsden Purchase. Reid joined the ill-fated filibustering expedition of Henry Crabb in early 1857, but left for California in April. After a brief visit to San Francisco, passing through San Diego, San Pedro, Santa Barbara, and Monterey along the way, Reid returned to the states via Panama. According to Eberstadt, only a few copies were saved from destruction during the holocaust in and about Selma during the Civil War. With the bookplate of Dorothy and Clinton Josey. Clark Old South III:490; Cowan p. 528; Eberstadt, Texas 162:677; Howes R172; Graff 3450; Wagner-Camp 307; Streeter Sale 176.
