xvi, 315 pp. (7½x5"), period full calf with repairs to spine ends and joints, tooled and lettered in gilt, gilt-stamped device on covers, all edges marbled. First Edition.

Bergenroth, a German national and political activist, fled to California in 1850 in the face of anti-Socialist political pressure in his native Berlin. "Contains his California experiences in 1850, including his formation of a motley crew of unsavory adventures, one of whom was executed by Vigilantes. Leaving California in 1851, he ultimately earned international fame as a scholar" - Howes C209; Cowan p. 108; Rocq 8298. Pacific-Union Club bookplate, bookseller's label pasted to front free endpaper.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
