Frederick Marryat, naval officer and the first important English novelist after Tobias Smollett to make full and amusing use of his varied experience at sea. The author travelled in the United States and used the fictional device of "Monsieur Violet" to paint a negative picture of America and especially Texas, borrowing from Josiah Gregg, George Kendall, Thomas Falconer and other sources. WAGNER-CAMP 97:5: "he bitterly slandered the conduct of the Texan-Santa Fe expedition."

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
