A Book of Trout Flies, Containing a List of the Most Important American Stream Insects & Their Imitations

Jennings, Preston J.

New York

Derrydale Press

Frontispiece photo and 1 plate in gravure; 11 lithographed plates of artificial flies and their natural counterparts by Alma W. Froderstrom, 7 of which are hand-colored. (8vo) original green cloth, stamped in gilt, titles on a blue background, top edge gilt, slipcase. No. 479 of 850 copies. First Edition.

Inscribed by Jennings on the first blank. Laid in letter dated Dec. 25, 1935, from illustrator Alma Froderstrom to Eugene Connett, who wrote the Afterword. Touted upon its publication as "the most important book to the American Fly-Fisher ever published," Jennings's book was the first systematic anglers' entomology for American waters. Largely devoted to mayflies, it also includes chapters on stoneflies, caddisflies, ants, midges, variants, and minnow imitations, setting the standard for subsequent books on the subject. "As a production," writes Paul Schullery, "it has rarely been matched." Bruns J16; Siegel 88.
