Almanach de Gotha, Annuaire Diplomatique et Statistique: 1846, 1851, 1853, 1854, 1862, 1863, 1868, and 1869

Justus Perthes

Variously paginated. (32mo), original blindstamped cloth with titles in gilt on spine, all but 1846 with printed endpapers, in the publisher’s dust-wrappers with printed paper spine labels.

It is fascinating to note the changes in the jackets over the two decades we have here, as the color changed from dusky violet in the ’40s and ’50s to dark blue in the mid-’50s to a lighter blue in the later ’60s. The publisher (thankfully) abandoned the French-fold- style jacket sometime after 1846 and before 1851.

Lot Amendments

Jackets: 1846 and 1853 show dampstaining; 1846 detached front and lacking French folds; 1851 spine toned, with tears and light chipping; 1863 and 1868 with larger chips, the rest with light chipping and some tears. Volumes: 1846 - both hinges cracked; 1868 - tear at the front pastedown; others near fine.
