"A most interesting account of one of the earliest official American expeditions into the Pacific. At Sumatra the Potomac, under the command of Commodore John Downes, was attacked by the Malays, which led to a major battle. This narrative of the voyage of the Potomac is less well-known than that written by Jeremiah N. Reynolds published the same year. The Potomac visited Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, Sumatra, Batavia, the Philippines, Macao and Canton in China, Hawaii, Tahiti, Valparaiso, Callao and Lima, the Galapagos Islands, and the Falkland Islands. Included is a description of U.S. whaling activity off the coast of South America; one of the plates is of a whaling scene." Hill, 1831.
