Padava [Padua]

Appresso Paolo, & Francesco Galignani, Fratell

[2], 62, 21, [14], 212, [30] leaves. i2, a-i6, k8, 2a-2c6, 2d4 (-2d4, a bank), A6 B-C4, 2A-2L6 2M8, 2a-e6. With 63 copper-engraved maps in the text; fold-out world map inserted between folios 19 & 20 in the second part, as issued. (Folio) 29.9x20.5, early vellum, gilt spine lettering, page edges mottled.

A handsome copy of the 1621 Magini edition of Ptolemy's Geography, with the addition of 37 "modern" maps, including the inserted folding reduction of Rumold Mercator's world map, which is often lacking. The first 27 maps are traditional Ptolemaic maps, followed by the modern maps reflective of the recent cartographic discoveries and refinements. Among these are three world maps (including the Mercator); a map of North and South America; Tartary (which shows part of North America and the "Stretta di Anian"); Palestine; the Turkish Empire with "Arabia Felix"; East Indies including India, China, and Japan (with a bit of America in the upper right); continent maps of Asia, Africa and Europe; the various nations, states, and provinces of Europe, etc. The inserted world map, titled "Orbis Terrae Compendiosa Descriptio," is the state with "a Hieronymo Porro redacta." The title page of the second part is dated 1620. With a rather bold ownership signature on the verso of the title page, over the printed dedication statement, dated February 1918 (or 1916?).

Lot Amendments

Occasional mild foxing or soilmarks within, a 2-inch tear into the text of leaf A2 of the first part (not approaching the maps on the leaf); a near fine copy.
