Philippi Cluverii Introductio in Universam Geographiam Tam veterem quam novam. Tabulis Geographicis XLVI ac notis olim ornata a Johanne Bunone

Cluverius, Philippus

Typis M. Jenour, Impensis Joannis Nicholsoni

[14]; 429, [46] pp. With engraved frontispiece; 47 (of 48) copper-engraved maps (all but 2 folding); 11 other engraved plates (all but 3 folding). (4to) 24.3x18 cm (9½x7"), period (or later) full calf, spine tooled in gilt,

An excellent copy of a quarto English edition of Philipp Clüver's esteemed Introductio in universam geographiam, first published, posthumously, in 1624, considered the first comprehensive modern geography. The maps include a fine double-hemisphere map of the world; maps of the continents, including a large map of North and South America with California an island; many maps of the nations, states, and regions of Europe; regional maps of the nations of the middle east, central Asia, the far east, Africa, and beyond. This copy without the Biblical map of the Holy Land, though there is a general map of the region, Totius Terrae Sanctae. The map list is taken from the OCLC/WorldCat listing. The missing map is designated "42a", perhaps indicating it was in some way supplemental. Bookplate of P.W. Donner covering up another; number stamped in gilt at top of spine.

Map list from OCLC listing of copy at the Biblioteca Nacional de España.
