Journal of Researches into the Natural History and Geology of the Countries Visited During the Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle Round the World, Under the Command of Capt. Fitz Roy, R.N.

Darwin, Charles

New York

Harper & Brothers

2 vols. vii, 351; 324 + 8, 4 pp. Illustrated with a few woodcuts in the text. 18x11 cm (7x4¼"), original blindstamped cloth, gilt cover vignettes, spine lettered in gilt. First American Edition.

Rare first American edition of Darwin's first book, first published in England in 1839. Though eclipsed in importance and fame by his later writings, most notably by On the Origin of Species, 1859, it was the observations on this first voyage that were to reveal to Darwin the irrefutable evidence of the evolutionary theory he was to bring to the forefront of scientific consciousness. Untrimmed and in the original cloth, although Vol. I had the spine repaired, and has been given later endpapers. Bookplates on front and rear pastedowns.

Lot Amendments

Spines worn with small chips, neat previous repair to Volume I, some rubbing and soil; tidemarks with some foxing; very good.
