Twice-Told Tales
Hawthorne, Nathaniel
American Stationers Co.

(4) ad, (5)-334, [2 blank], [16] ad pp. (12mo) 19.2x12 cm. (7½x4¾"), original brown cloth with blindstamped pattern, spine lettered in gilt; housed in custom blue cloth chemise and cloth and morocco slipcase. First Edition.

The book appears in two heights, and this is one of the so-called "tall copies," with about 2" of space at the bottom margins; much scarcer than the more common "short" copy. Front free endpaper with the morocco and gilt bookplate of Lucy Smith Battson. All these tales first appeared in The Token or the New England Magazine, and were assembled and edited by Hawthorne for this collection. 1,000 copies were published in March 1837. BAL 7581; Clark A 2.1; Grolier American 44.

Lot Amendments
Scuffing to slipcase; volume re-cased, with some faint discoloration to cloth, rubbing to extremities, corners mildly bumped; abraded area on front pastedown where a plate was likely removed, expert repair work done to first page of ads at front, a bit of scattered light foxing, a nice solid copy; very good.
