Lot closed - unsold
$20,000 - $30,000

Collection of 219 engraved plates from Volkamer's "Nürbergisches Hesperides, oder, gründliche..." and "Continuation der Nürbergischen Hesperidum..."

Volkamer, Johann Christoph

Bound volumes of 219 copper-engraved plates, 10 of them folding (1 of those a map). 34.3x21.5 cm  (13½x8½"), later boards.

Finely engraved plates from Johann Christopher Volkamer's marvelous two-volume work on citrus, the elaborate illustrations not only depicting numerous varieties of the fruit, but also the landscapes, country estates, towns, and villages around Volkamer's native Nuremberg, and of the city itself and its many gardens. Some have views of the exotic lands from which the fruits originated. The illustrations have a surrealistic quality, with huge citrus fruits hanging over the buildings and residents. The two volumes contained extensive text in addition to 247 plates - the text is not present here, but a large proportion of the plates are. Johann Christoph Volkamer was the son of the physician Johann George Volkamer. He occupied himself with botany as a hobby, and maintained a garden in what is today's Nurembergian Gostenhof district.

Lot Amendments

Boards rubbed, edges and extremities worn; three of the folding plates with tears but no loss, another with an old repair; plates quite clean overall, with just some minor soiling on occasion, very good condition.
