Letter from Lenny Bruce to Isabella Frankau, a British expert in addiction, about the manufacture of heroin

Bruce, Lenny

Los Angeles

October 17, 1962

One page. Typed carbon retained file copy, unsigned.

Important letter discussing manufacture of heroin. From Bruce to Isabella ‘Lady’ Frankau, a British psychiatrist who specialized in alcohol and drug addiction. “I was arrested for possession of Heroin… If I can prove it wasn’t Heroin then I can get the entire case dismissed… If these black marketers didn’t make Heroin the correct way, then it is not Heroin. I.E. If to make Heroin you have to bring poppy seed soup to a boil, drain off most of the water and you didn’t boil the water for poppy soup, nor drain the water off, then you wouldn’t have Heroin.  You have to make Heroin according to certain specifications and if they didn’t they got something else… Please send me every available definition of Heroine that you can find, legal and medical… I am enclosing $20.00 and would like for you to send me the fat mobilizive [sic] substance pills I have heard about. Please send me a six-month’s supply... Love, Lenny.”
