Most clubs provided their own PA systems but they often weren’t suited to the rapid, free-style delivery Lenny had developed by the mid- 50’s. The iconic Shure Unidyne 55S, with its wide-angled, polar acoustics, produced less feedback and reduced background noise -- especially suited for the small, tight, stages Lenny frequently encountered. He sometimes carried a microphone of his own just in case. There is no indicia of ownership on the microphone or stand itself but it was obtained from Frankie Ray Perilli, Bruce’s former partner/manager. Included as a bonus is a one-page-letter from Bruce setting up the conditions for a private engagement he was planning in Chicago. Among them “Club is to rent Shure Brothers microphone #556/s [sic] in good working order…” Typed carbon, retained file copy, unsigned, 15 Nov 1962.  Although the letter mistakenly refers to model 556/s, stapled to it is Bruce’s holographic draft, written in blue ink on both sides of an envelope, referring to it correctly as Model 55S.
