5 volumes bound in 2. [8], 96, 1150; 655; [4], 552, [8], 688, [44], 208 numbered columns. With engraved portrait frontispiece, title pages with large woodcut devices, head and tail pieces, initials throughout. (Folio) 40x26 cm (16¾x10"), period speckled calf with gilt-stamped armorial decoration, rebacked with later calf, red morocco spine labels lettered in gilt. Ex Editione Romana. 

St. Ambrose, Bishop of Milan from 374 to 397, became one of the most influential ecclesiastical figures of the 4th century. He was one of the four original Doctors of the Church and served as a mentor to St. Augustine. He is patron saint of Milan.

Lot Amendments

Fair amount of wear and scuffing to original calf, with some areas of loss and wormholing; interiors with some dampstaining at bottom margins, some minor tears and chips to page edges, large nearly full page dampstain to later leaves of second volume, p. 390-91 with 3" strip of text torn out, blank leaf of at rear of volume 2 with wormholing and large piece torn away at bottom corner, last few blanks excised; overall good or better.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
