With an Account of the Discovery of the Miller Collection by Mae Peter Reed. Illustrated with paintings by Alfred Jacob Miller, some color. (8vo), original red buckram with beveled edges, gilt stamped cover design, black morocco spine label lettered in gilt, top edge gilt; housed in publisher's slipcase. No. 108 of 265 copies.

Signed by the author at the limitation. The second volume in a trilogy that includes The Year of Decision and The Course of Empire. The illustrations provide a look at the only paintings of Rocky Mountain trappers actually made on the spot and the first paintings ever made of the Rocky Mountains, published here for the first time. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1948.
