3 octavo volumes. Original brown cloth stamped in blind, gilt spines. Includes:

  • The Western World; Or, Travels In The United States In 1846-47: Exhibiting Them In Their Latest Development, Social, Political, And Industrial; Including A Chapter On California. 2 volumes. First American Edition, From the Second London Edition. Philadelphia: Lea & Blanchard.1849.
  • Life and Liberty in America: or, Sketches of a Tour in the United States and Canada in 1857-8. With 10 illustrated plates. Ex-library with some stamps to verso of title page, pocket and slip at rear endpapers. New York: Harper & Brothers, 1859.

Mackay came to America as the correspondent of the London Morning Chronicle to report the debates in Congress and to sound out public opinion on the Oregon question. Included are chapters on commerce and commercial policy, government, politics, slavery, agriculture, religion, education, and manufacturing.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
