(Folio) 32x25 cm (12¾x10"), brown cloth with gilt seahorse decorations on front cover and spine, spine lettered in gilt, top edge gilt. First and only edition.

A selection of letters and photographs by the author detailing a trip taken by himself and General Nelson Miles from San Francisco to Hawaii in 1902-03. Features  numerous striking photographs from the Philippines, China, Japan, Guam, Honolulu, etc., including a number of double-page panoramic views. Rare, with no auction records located since 1989.

Nelson Appleton Miles was an American military general who served in the American Civil War, the American Indian Wars, and the Spanish–American War. From 1895 to 1903, he served as the last Commanding General of the United States Army before the office was abolished.

Lot Amendments

Some wear and scuffing to cloth, rubbing to extremities, a bit of fraying to spine head; front hinge starting, creasing and a few closed tears to edge of folding map, interior with occasional light offsetting, some photos with mild toning or fading to edges; very good.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
