2 volumes. Vol. 1 with 48 chromolithographed plates including 1 folding, interleaved with letterpress. Vol. 2 with 47 plates. (4to) 30x23.5 cm (11¾x9¼") uniformly bound in original brown cloth decorated in black and gilt. First Editions. 

The beautiful plates are by John Nugent Fitch. Great Flower Books, p.80; Nissen BBI 2107.

In the obituary for Benjamin S. Williams included in Volume 9 of the full set, the purpose of the work is described: "In 1881 he commenced his magnum opus, the Orchid Album, which was projected with the idea of supplying a demand for illustrations of Orchidaceous plants, with botanical descriptions of the plants figured, and notes on their cultivation ... Its appearance was hailed with great satisfaction in horticultural circles throughout the world, and it numbers among its subscribers nearly all lovers of Orchids and many of our leading and most influential horticulturalists."

Light rubbing to extremities; scattered light foxing generally not affecting plates, interiors sound with vibrant plates; both volumes very good or better.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
