Manumission Expediente/Portfolio for a 12-year-old female slave, Marcelina, claiming her freedom






Four document comprising six leaves, ink manuscripts in various hands, plus blue partially printed cover. Various sizes, 31.5x22.5 cm (12½x8¾") or smaller, stitched together.

The 12-year-old girl slave, Marcelina, was paid 5 pesos in bills as a monthly wage but stopped receiving not only her wages for 2 months, but also clothing ("ropa") and footwear ("calzado") and 51 pesos was given to the slave owner on her account for her freedom ("a cuenta de su libertad"), with witnesses present. Marcelina is claiming her liberty. Present is a rare document with Police stamp re: transferring slaves from one owner to another. The Junta de Patronato de Guanabacoa grants Marcelina her freedom and she is to be given her "cedula de libre" (ID of a free person).

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
