Oscar Slater, an Edinburgh pimp, was arrested and convicted in 1909 of a murder he did not commit. From prison he contacted the famous author in hopes that Doyle could solve a case in real life. Doyle's results are presented in this book, bringing Slater's case before the court of public opinion. Slater was eventually released on a technicality, although not exonerated.
