Volumes I-VIII complete, comprising 39 issues in all. Extensively illustrated from photographs & drawings. 24.5x16 cm (9¾x6¼") or smaller), Volumes I-IV are bound in early 20th century half leather & cloth without the wrappers; Volumes V-VIII are in the original printed wrappers.
The rare first eight volumes of the Sierra Club Bulletin, spanning nearly twenty years, an important documentation of the early years of an organization more crucial than ever in our environmentally-challenged times, as well as a marvelous look at the wonders of California and the High Sierra. The run includes the very scarce first two issues, which were published in a smaller format than subsequent issues (19.5x12.5 cm), and had only a single folding map in No. 1, and a plate with a photograph on one side and a map on the other in No. 2. The remaining issues are quite extensively illustrated, with numerous plates from photographs. The bound volumes have the bookplates of Willis Linn Jepson, and some of the issues in wrappers have his pencil notations or initials on the front wrappers.
Willis Linn Jepson (1867-1946) is considered California's most distinguished early botanist. He graduated from the University of California in 1889, and became a UC professor in botany, a botanical writer, and a conservationist.
