Hill comments that "Sir William Hutcheon Hall commanded the Nemesis during the Opium War operations. She was an iron paddle-steamer especially constructed at Liverpool for the East India Company, was fitted with a sliding keel, had a light draught, and carried comparatively heavy armament. She was the first iron steamer to round the Cape.
