Ship's papers signed by Thomas Jefferson as President, and by Levi Lincoln acting as Secretary of State

Jefferson, Thomas

Washington, D.C.

April 21, 1801

Ship's papers, engraved on vellum, filled out in ink. Infentured at top edge; top third is taken up with engraving of a lighthouse and ships. 45.5x29.5 cm (17¾x11½"), affixed to backing board with glue at corners.

Rare example of ship's papers or passport from the early months of Jefferson's presidency. During this period Jefferson had no regular Secretary of State, and Levi Lincoln, the Attorney-General, doubled as acting Secretary of State until James Madison assumed that post on May 2 1801, so documents signed by Lincoln as acting Secretary of State are quite uncommon. The papers are for the ship Alexander Hamilton, of Baltimore, Maryland, Baptist Merich the master. There is perhaps some irony that the ship in question is named for Jefferson's political arch-rival.

Due to the size and/or weight of this lot extra shipping and/or handling charges may apply.

Lot Amendments

Old folds with some wear along them including a few small holes, half of the paper seal is missing, the remainder damaged, some foxing and discoloration; still very good, Jefferson's signature quite clear.
