Date:
1919-1963
Description:

Includes:

  • National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. Membership card issued for 1 year (NY, 1919) Signed in type by Acting Treasurer J. E. Spingarn.
  • [Leaflet] The Why and Wherefore of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People / A Brief Summary of Outstanding Achievement and of Purposes (NY, July 1919) 2pp.  Chipped and worn at edges, but with all text complete. With original, worn and soiled mailing envelope.
  • CORE-LATOR / Published by the Congress of Racial Equality. No. 103, (NY, September 1963) 6pp. Mailed to a subscriber. With accounts of civil rights demonstrations and activities in Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, and South Carolina – as well as New York and Philadelphia.

The NAACP membership card and flier were issued in the tenth year of the organization’s existence. The NAACP leaflet is scarce; WorldCat records only 5 institutional holdings. CORE, together with SNCC, became nationally prominent during its youthful “Freedom Rides” to the segregated South in the 1960s. All its publications are surprisingly scarce, including the CORE-LATOR, which was issued from about 1947 to 1965. No institution has a complete set of the periodical.
