Combier, C[yprien]

Arthus Bertrand

xvi, 544 pp. Illustrated with folding map in rear. (8vo) 22x13.7 cm (8¾x5½"), original wrappers bound in modern three quarters calf with marbled boards, spine lettering and rules in gilt, raised bands. First Edition.

"Forced into early retirement for reasons of health, Combier set out to write an account of the voyages he had undertaken during the course of his business ventures in the New World. Combier sailed on many voyages aboard the Felicie, a vessel owned by him and his shipping associates. He established himself primarily in Guaymas and Hermosillo and sailed between Mexican ports such as Guaymas, Acapulco, Mazatlan and Veracruz. He also visited Valparaiso, Chile, and the La Paz-Loreto environs in Baja California. His observations of the people and terrain of the areas visited were carefully noted and included in his account. The last pages of this book are taken up by what Combier terms his 'Révélations' of a theological nature experienced during his voyage" - Hill. The detailed map which is after Garcia Cubas shows the Pacific coast of Mexico and the northern gulf coast of Baja California, as well as southern Arizona and the Gadsden Purchase, noting all towns and ranches, rivers, Apaches, and of course location of mines (Barrett 555. Hill, Pacific Voyages 348).
