Original letter hand-written by R. Crumb in pencil on 8.5" x 11" printed-out email paper. Circa August 21, 2008. Signed "R. C." Very fine condition, light corner-wear and stain to bottom corner. Crumb's 21st c. epistolary technique is as follows: his brother-in-law Alex prints out emails addressed to Crumb; the un-tech-savvy Crumb writes his response on paper; Alex transcribes the handwritten letter into email, sends the email to the correspondent and saves the letter. A collector has latterly made an exclusive deal to obtain Crumb's handwritten email drafts; thus, these "email letters" are now essentially off the market.
Reply to Joe Archibald, who was preparing a 2010 museum exhibit of Maxon Crumb's artwork, and requested one of Charles Crumb's "scribbled note pads" (Charles Crumb, Robert and Maxon's older brother, was a brilliant, troubled eccentric who filled numerous notebooks with writings indistinguishable from formless scribbling). Crumb writes in full: "Archibald - I'm willing to LEND one of Charles' notebooks, but not part with it permanently, I only have a few of them left."
