Engraved frontispieces after William Hogarth in Vols. I & III. (8vo) 15x9.3 cm (6x3¾"), period calf ruled in gilt, raised spine bands, morocco lettering pieces. Fourth editions of Vols. I & II; second edition of Vol. III; first editions of Vols. IV-IX. 

An early mixed edition in period calf of Laurence Sterne's classic, considered by many to be the first modern novel, with its discursive structure and stream-of-consciousness narration. Signed by the author as issued at the head of the opening chapters of Vols. V, II and IX, part of Sterne's effort to combat piracy of his work. Vol. I with the black leaf E5; Vol. III with the marbled leaf between L4 and L5; Vol. VII in the first state with errata on title verso. Vol. IV with nine lines in French written in an early hand on the blank verso of last text leaf.

Lot Amendments

Some rubbing to spines and cover edges, wear and some chipping to spine ends and corners, joints tender; darkening to margins of early and later leaves from turn-ins, as is common, moderate aging within; top corner of Vol. II front free endpaper torn off, there are no rear free endpapers in Vols. I and IV. Very good condition.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
