Churchill, Winston S.

Thornton Butterworth

392 pp. Original plum cloth with three line title on front. Housed in a custom half blue morocco clamshell box, spine lettered and decorated in gilt. First Edition.

Presentation copy of Winston Churchill's superb autobiography of his early years, inscribed on blank leaf preceding half-title: "To Archie, from Winston, Oct. 14, 1930". The recipient was his lifelong friend and colleague Archibald Sinclair. Sinclair had a military and political career which shadowed Churchill's closely - like Churchill he had an American mother, was a cavalry officer, and went from soldiering to politics. After service with the Life Guards and other units, he joined Churchill at the Minister of Munitions in 1918, and became his personal Military Secretary at the War Office in 1919. After two decades in politics, including as leader of the Parliamentary Liberal Party, Churchill brought him into his war cabinet in 1940 as Secretary of State for Air. Second state of the book, with list of 12 titles on verso of half-title, a cancel leaf. Woods A37(a).
