First edition of Hieronymus Wolf's translation of Isocrates, which remained the standard version for two hundred years. Wolf (1516-1580) was a pupil of Melanchthon who spent most of his life at Augsburg, first as secretary and librarian to Johann Jacob Fugger, and then as Rector of the newly founded Gymnasium, over which he presided until his death. This Latin translation of the Orations and Letters of Isocrates is accompanied by 20 pages of critical notes and a 94-page commentary, all based directly on the Greek text, with citations in Greek. Adams I-221. In this copy, the publisher's last name is inked out on the title page and in the colophon, the latter causing a hole in the paper. Also, "Aquini codex" is written in an old hand on the title page.
