Letter from Edgar Rice Burroughs to a fan of the just-published Tarzan of the Apes (in The All-Story magazine), admitting he did "not like the ending of the story" and referring to the sequel he was writing

Burroughs, Edgar Rice

November 13, 1912

Typed letter signed by Edgar Rice Burroughs. 17 lines, on Burroughs' Chicago letterhead. 28.5x18.5 cm.

Very remarkable early letter about Tarzan, written just a month after Tarzan of the Apes first appeared in print in the All-Story pulp magazine (Volume 24, October 1912) - it would be a year and a half before the book edition was published. Burroughs writes to a reader in Great Britain, a Mr. John T. Hall, Kingston-on-Thames, England: "My dear Mr. Hall: Accept my thanks for your good letter of the 27th ultimo, just received. The many kindly expressions of interest in Tarzan of the Apes that have come from England and the Colonies have been a source of considerable pleasure to me. I am glad that you do not like the ending of the story, for neither do I. We shall have things straightened out though in the sequel which I am now working on. It is a matter of regret to me that the great distance precludes the possibility of my acceding to your request to read the Mss before publication. Yours very truly, [signed] ER Burroughs."
