Autograph manuscript fragment, single leaf written in ink on one side, the entry for the word "Admonish" with a lengthy etymological analysis

Author:
Webster, Noah

Place:
No place

Publisher:

Date:
before 1828

Description:

39 lines, on plain sheet of paper measuring 25x19.5 cm (9¾x7¾").

Excellent  autograph leaf from Webster’s great American Dictionary (1828), giving insight into Webster’s working process and varyingly significantly from the printed text. The entry lists various meanings of the word “Admonish” and its derivatives, together with sample usages and a lengthy etymological analysis which references the Hebrew language and script. This manuscript text varies significantly from the published form: the etymological portion of the present text is crossed through, and the word was subsequently published with a significantly reduced etymological analysis. Accompanied by the page in the printed dictionary in which Admonish is defined, and also a leaf with a steel-engraved portrait of Webster. Webster’s Dictionary is a PMM book. Webster gave away pages of his manuscript as mementos to friends and visitors. The bulk of Webster’s manuscript is at the Morgan Library. Only a small number of leaves remain in private hands.
