(4to) 30.3x25.3 cm (11¾x9½"), original three quarter gilt-ruled morocco & cloth, front cover lettered in, gilt-decorated spine, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. One of 250 copies printed by Julius Bien, New York. First Edition.

Sumptuously-produced limited edition of this major work of Americana and Californiana. Important for Carleton Watkins' striking photographs of Yosemite’s natural wonders, and noteworthy for its elegant printing. Watkins made his photographs in 1866; the remaining four by W. Harris were taken in 1867. The two maps are of Yosemite Valley and the area adjacent to it; they were prepared by Gardner and King and by Gardner and Hoffman, respectively. A magnificent book and “one of the major contributions to Sierra Nevada literature”  (Currey & Kruska). Currey & Kruska 60; Farquhar 7a; Graff 4646; Howes W389.


Lot Amendments

Condition:
Some sunning to the covers, scuffs to extremities, two small stains to rear cover; front free endpaper loose, occasional light foxing to text; just mild fading to some of the photographs, overall they are rich in tone, nicer than usually found. Very good or better condition.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
