[6], 303 pp. (8vo) 18.2x11.2 cm (7¼x4½"), original blindstamped cloth, spine lettered in gilt, white endpapers. First Edition.

Emerson’s most famous book, containing his universally celebrated essay “Self-Reliance”. BAL's binding state 'C' (no sequence determined), with blindstamped corner ornaments measuring about 2 1/8" high and spine in blind with an arrangement of rules and filigree ornaments. Ink ownership inscription of David Fosdick, Jr., dated June 1841, on front free endpaper. This copy with a number of very light pencil notes in margins and underlines to text. Copies in the original cloth are quite scarce.  (Grolier, 100 American # 47). BAL 5189.

Light rubbing to covers, a bit of wear to corners and spine ends, slight loss of cloth to two places along front joint; very good condition.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
