[The Holy Bible, Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New: Newly Translated out of the Originall Tongues: and with the former Translations diligently compared and revised, by His Maiesties speciall comandement. Appointed to be read in Churches]

[Robert Barker]

Unpaginated. 59 lines. Woodcut initials, a few headpieces; woodcut genealogical tables. (Folio) 41.7x26 cm (16½x10¼"), period blind-tooled calf over heavy wooden boards. First Edition, second issue.

The Great “She” Bible, Fry’s “first edition, second issue” of f the King James Bible, commonly known as the Authorized Version, undoubtedly the most influential of all English language versions of the Bible. The first edition is known to exist in two issues, the Great "He" Bible and the Great "She" Bible. The accepted first issue of the Bible had the reading in Ruth 3:15,"...and he went into the citie," and in the accepted second issue, the passage reads correctly "...and she went into the citie.” The present copy includes the Genealogies, but lacks the general and the New Testament title pages, several preliminary leaves, and the final leaf of Revelations; some preliminary leaves torn with loss. Despite flaws, a substantial and impressive copy in contemporary binding. Sold as is.  (Herbert 309)
