United States Airship 'Akron' (Zeppelin)

Bourke-White, Margaret

Gelatin silver photograph. 34x51 cm (13½x20"), matted, in frame made of duralumin used in the construction of the airship Akron, under glass; overall 52.5x66 cm (20¼x25¼").

Famous photograph by Margaret Bourke-White in its original duralumin frame affixed with a presentation plaque. Bourke-White took this historic photograph of the first U.S. Zeppelin, the U.S.S. Akron (powered by helium instead of hydrogen), as it was launched from its hangar at the Goodyear Airdock in Akron, Ohio. To commemorate the event, the Goodyear Company had a limited number of Bourke-White's photos encased in specialty Art Deco frames made from the same duralumin metal used in the construction of the ship, and presented them to the company's executives, engineers and naval officers involved in the execution of the airship. Another set of limited prints were set aside for the Goodyear tire dealers as sales awards for achieving outstanding quotas. The plaque on the present frame reads: "-Winner- Barr's Vulc. Works, Third Annual Goodyear Dealers Zeppelin Race, July-August 1931. This frame is made of duralumin used in girder construction of the United States airship 'Akron' built by the Goodyear Zeppelin Corporation."

Lot Amendments

Some minor wear to the frame; the matte seems to be a more recent addition; image with some fading, a few creases and rubmarks; overall very good.
