Approx. 50 leaves, each covered on both sides with a striking array of material, and the pastedowns are employed as well. 28.5x37 cm (11¼x14½"), flexible black cloth with color pictorial cover label.
Marvelous pictorial and textual scrapbook presenting the premier World's Fair of the early 20th century, conceived as a celebration of both the joining of the two great oceans by the Panama Canal and the rebirth of San Francisco following the devastation of the 1906 earthquake, but sadly overshadowed by the ongoing brutality of the Great War. A small typed label on the first leaf indicates this scrapbook was assembled by Kate M. Holmes, 215 23rd No., Seattle. Included are original candid snapshot photographs; halftone views and panoramas; views clipped from magazines, view books and brochures; color reproductions of frescos, paintings and statuary; and more. The pictorial melange is greatly enhanced by the extensive typed commentary by the compiler, and captions for many of the photographs. This scrapbook album is one of the finest amateur compilations of its kind we have had the pleasure to offer.
