"Being a map of central California, showing some of the people, places and events that had to do with our early days. Wells Fargo Bank & Union Trust Co., San Francisco, Established 76 years ago, in 1852"

Patterson & Sullivan, cartographers

San Francisco

Color pictorial map, apparently a woodblock or linocut. On sheet 27.5x25 cm (10¾x9¾").

Rare pictorial map of the central portion of California, east at the top, San Francisco Bay dominating the bottom portion. Pictured and described are historical events and personages in California history, such as the Donner Party (reduced to eating their shoes for Christmas dinner, but not, apparently, each other); the Pony Express; Sutter's Fort; Black Bart robbing stages; the 1851 Vigilance Committee; Chinese miners; etc. And of course a nod to Henry Wells and William G. Fargo, with their portraits, gold scales weighing their deposits, their stage coaches crossing the plains, etc. No copies are listed in OCLC, though a map by Patterson & Sullivan of San Francisco, with vignette views, from 1937 is listed, a single copy at the California Historical Society.
