5]-254 pp. With 121 lithographed plates, 46 of them double-page, many with multiple images; 4 maps. 37.5x31 cm. (14¾x12¼"), original calf-backed brown cloth, title in gilt on front cover and in blind on rear. First Edition.

Striking lithographed views of the farms, residences, towns, and other features of Stanislaus County, California, straddling the Central Valley. This copy with an ink inscription on the front flyleaf, "Miss Annie Mary Cousins, a present from her uncle, Charles Dallas"; Mr. Dallas' residence is pictured in the plate facing p.50, and his biography is on pp. 127 & 128. He came to California in 1849 after having lived in Iowa for 13 years, and sent the book back to his niece. It has remained in the Dallas family of Iowa until recently being given to the present owner. Cowan p.894; Rocq 14982.

Lot Amendments

Covers stained, extremities worn, spine foot chipped; occasional marginal dampstaining to to contents, one leaf detached with edges worn, a few marginal tears; restored; overall very good.

We are specialists at packing and shipping books and works on paper.   All lots purchased by the same client are combined for shipping in order to keep the cost as economical as possible.  Our preferred method for domestic shipments is UPS Ground but we can also ship via FedEx or USPS Priority Mail. We do NOT ship USPS Media Mail under any circumstances.For international orders we select the most appropriate carrier depending on the value and weight of the items purchased.  We are happy to accommodate special arrangements by request.

Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
