474 pp. Illustrated throughout with a folding map, numerous plates and illustrations, mostly from photographs. (8vo) 9x6", original full morocco elaborately tooled, spine lettered and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt. First Edition.

Uncommon, thoroughly illustrated county history. "Contains . . the first printing of General John Bidwell's autobiography, biographical sketch of William B. Ide, . . but most important, the 'Autobiography of Major Stephen Cooper' written in 1888. Major Cooper settled in Missouri in 1807. He tells of Indian troubles there in 1814, and of how, in 1822, with fourteen others, he fitted out the first company that opened up the Santa trade. [etc., etc.] He traveled overland to California in 1846, was on hand promptly after the gold discovery in 1848, and claimed Polk's message on the subject resulted from one of his letters." (Graff). Invoices are sent out the day following the auction and include a minimum $10 handling fee plus actual shipping and insurance charges.
