Approximately 157 daily issues covering Monday through Saturday from Vol. 30, January 1st to Vol. 31, June 30th 1866. Contains early original Mark Twain appearances with his first thirteen newspaper letter / article contributions with his newly adopted pen name. All are from his famous 1866 Sandwich Islands (Hawaii) trip where he was sent by the Sacramento Daily Union to determine why Honolulu had a more successful whaling port than San Francisco. The Twain articles present in this Volume date from April 16 to June 21, 1866. His first separately published work came one year later with The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and Other Sketches. Previously in the Sacramento and San Francisco Public Libraries with their bookplates on the front pastedown, plus other occasional library stamps and markings.
