With a mounted and tissue-guarded photograph by Fox Talbot, known as a “Talbotype” or “calotype”: 18x13 cm (7x5"); small printed label on the reverse of the mount reading “Patent Talbotype or Sun Pictures.”  (Small folio) 28.7x23 cm (11¼x9"), period polished half-calf over marbled boards, spine tooled in gilt with morocco lettering piece, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. First Edition. 

Fox Talbot and Louis Daguerre are widely seen as having independently invented photography, with neither being given priority. This, the 1846 Art-Union, is the world's first example of a periodical illustrated with a photograph. The photo it contains was for many readers the first they had ever seen. The publisher, apparently expecting some people to doubt something so miraculous, added a note to readers assuring them that the image was taken "...from Nature."  The photo accompanies a 2-page article on the calotype process and Fox Talbot's part in its development. There is a further 1-page article on page 195 entitled “The Application of the Talbotype.”
