Various authors

Place:
New York

Publisher:
G.P. Putnam and Co.

Date:

Description:

The Frontispiece is an original mounted crystallotype (also called calotype) identified in pencil below it (as in all copies): "Hancock House (Boston), an original sun picture.” Also illustrated with engravings on wood from drawings, by dopler and daguerreotypes: and facsimiles of autograph letters. (8vo) 10x12 cm (4" x 4¾"), green cloth re-backed with original spine strip laid down, debossed oval frame with gilt stamped vignette on cover.

A landmark in the history of photography and photo-illustrated books in America, it was the first time that a book made use of a photograph for illustration. The photo is generally attributed to John Adams Whipple, an American inventor and early photographer. He was the first in the United States to manufacture the chemicals used for daguerreotypes, and pioneered astronomical and night photography. Early gift inscription on front free endpaper, with a tipped-in presentation letter on front preliminary blank from J. Prentiss Allen, dated 1854.
