Title:
Excursions Daguerriennes, Representant Les Vues et Les Monuments Anciens et Modernes Les Plus Remarquables Du Globe

Author:
Lerebours, Noel-Marie-Paymal

Place:
Paris

Publisher:
Rittner et Goupil; Lerebours; Bossange

Date:
1841; 1842

Description:

2 volumes. Illustrated with engraved plates copied from daguerreotypes.  The Excursions Daguerriennes began publication as issues, parts or fascicles, which were later bound into volumes.  The total projected plates in this "first series" were supposed to be 50 (as stated on the title page of the 1841 volume). However, 60 plates were produced.  Volume I contains 29 plates mounted on thick paper, Volume II contains 31. 27.3x38 cm (10¾x15"), red morocco-backed boards ruled and lettered in gilt on spine.

Every daguerreotype is unique, as the process does not involve a “negative” from which positive copies can be created.  Thus, in general, the only way early daguerreotypes could be reproduced for public viewing was by making engravings from the original plates. The diverse images in these volumes include the world’s first accurate images (taken from daguerreotypes) of:  Niagara Falls; the Coliseum: St. Mark’s Cathedral: the Grand Canal; the Leaning Tower of Pisa; Notre Dame Cathedral; the Parthenon; the Alcazar; the Alhambra; the Pyramid of Cheops; the Kremlin; St. Paul’s Cathedral; and other notable sites in Algeria, Sweden, Switzerland, and elsewhere.
