England & Das Romantische Amerika

Hoppé, E.O.

Verlag Ernst Wasmuth A.G.

Illustrated with 304 b&w photographs each. 30.5x23.5 cm (12x9¼"), vellum-backed colored-paper boards, decorative bird emblem stamped in gilt, lettering and rule on spine in gilt, morocco spine labels. First Editions.

Part of the Orbis Terrarum travel series, this rich collection of 608 images from the United States & England in the mid 1920s provides a window into the countries as they existed in the inter-war period. Both volumes bear previous ownership stamp on front free endpapers.

Trained as a banker, E.O. Hoppé became increasingly enamored with photography, and in 1907 jettisoned his commercial career and opened a portrait studio. Within a few years, E.O. Hoppé was the undisputed leader of pictorial portraiture in Europe. To say that someone has a "household name" has become a cliché, yet in Hoppé's case the phrase is apt. Rarely in the history of the medium has a photographer been so famous in his own lifetime among the general public. It is difficult to think of a prominent name in the fields of politics, art, literature, and the theatre who did not pose for his camera."

Lot Amendments
