VU was a weekly French pictorial magazine, created and directed by Lucien Vogel, published from March 1928 to May 1940. It combined stunning photography, innovative layouts (especially double-page spreads), and excellent reporting, creating a revolution in journalism and setting the stage for future photo magazines.
VU published early work by photographers who later became internationally renowned, including André Kertész, Germaine Krull, Man Ray, André Brassaï, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and others. The original negatives for the images that appeared in VU disappeared during WW II and have never been found. Thus, the photogravures contained in it are among the only surviving examples of some of the earliest works by the aforementioned photographers. A major exhibition of photographs from VU was hosted by the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP) in 2006 - 2007. The magazine is also highlighted as a component of the Thomas Walther Collection at the Museum of Modern Art, in New York City
