The Discovery of the Yosemite and the Indian War of 1851, Which Led to that Event

Bunnell, Lafayette Houghton

Flemming H. Revell

31 pp. With 7 wood-engraved plates including frontispiece & map; 14 wood engravings in the text. (8vo) 19.5x13 cm (7¾x5"), green cloth decorated in black, lettered in gilt on front cover and spine. First Edition.

Presentation copy inscribed in pencil on blank leaf preceding frontispiece: "To Mrs. Gertrude Gale, with the highest regards of the Author, July 27th, 1882."  While it is probable that the Walker party saw Yosemite Valley from its rim in 1833, and more than one prospector or hunter (including William Penn Abrams and U.N. Reamer in October 1849) stumbled across it as well, it was the March 27, 1851, incident, when the Mariposa Battalion pursued Indians into the valley, that brought Yosemite to the attention of the general public. The narrative of Bunnel, and the diaries of Robert Eccleston, are the principal sources of information on the Mariposa Indian War. The first edition is much scarcer than the reprints that followed, and inscribed copies notable so. Currey & Kruska 27.

Lot Amendments

Some light rubbing to corners and spine ends, head a bit frayed, a few small bubbles to front cover cloth; near fine, rarely found so nice.
